Year 3 - Pre 11+ Foundation

Purpose

We would recommend you specifically begin preparing a child for the 11+ at Year 3 with a steady approach and building on some crucial aspects of their education. For our Year 3 students we help your child to perform to the best of their ability in Maths and English regardless of whether they are going to go on and try for a selective school place through a Grammar School test or not. For the most part these concern the core English and Maths skills.

The purpose of our Year 3 Pre-Plus course is to help students to perform to the best of their ability in Maths and English ready to make a leap confidently onto the Year 4 Intermediate course taking that one step closer to the 11+ exam.

Aims and Outcomes

For our year 3 students we aim to develop each child’s literacy and numeracy skills to better prepare them for the 11+ grammar test. We believe students who are introduced to the 11+ programme starting from year 3 will be better prepared by learning with a gradual approach and developing their ability to work quickly and accurately.

Content Area

English

As part of the course at AEC we focus on student’s literacy skills development. We promote, encourage and teach our students to participate in group learning of reading and interpreting fictional and non-fictional text to aid the broadening of their vocabulary, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and improving core writing skills. We also include verbal reasoning which aims to evaluate your child’s ability to think constructively, rather than at simple fluency or vocabulary recognition.

Maths

When students undertake the 11+ test they maybe be asked to answer a question a minute, being able to calculate in your head is essential therefore, if a child is not confident or struggle with time management, inaccurate or unnecessary mistakes will be made. Without the crucial mathematical skills many children simply will not achieve their potential in Maths.

Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division are the basic core skills but many children do not possess the skills for these topics in depth or do not have sufficient practice to be able to work quickly and accurately which is what is required for the 11+ exam. For our year 3 students, we help prepare them for their 11+ by ensuring they have strong numeracy skills. We develop our students knowledge and understanding by covering key topic such as times tables, the four operations, and mental arithmetic as well as building their confidence to support and prepare them more steadily for the 11+ exam.

Year 4 - Pre 11+ Intermediate

Purpose

For our Year 4 course, we use a steady approach for children to prepare them for the 11+ exam. From experience we know the best preparation for the exams cannot be achieved in a short period of time which is why we commence our exam preparation for children as early as possible all the way through Year 5 and right up to the real exam. Our approach is designed to support children leading up to, during and beyond the 11+ exam. This course focuses on building the skills needed for the 11+ exam, introducing topics related to the exam, as well as embedding additional Mathematics and English core skills . We work with students to ensure at the end of the course they have an extremely robust foundation in both subjects which then they are ready to apply these skills into the advance course in Year 5.

Aims and Outcomes

We believe children benefit from ongoing scattered support rather than condensing preparation for the 11+ exam. We aim to develop each child’s knowledge by challenging them academically and shaping their performance towards the demands of the 11+ exam by building rigour, perfecting their core skills, as well growing their confidence. This course not only focuses on preparing our Year 4 students for the 11+ exam but it is also tailored to develop and improve a children performance with schoolwork, homework and become more confident when independently studying in both subjects.

Content Area

English

For English, with the introduction of synonyms and antonyms we also cover other aspects throughout the course such as SPAG, verbal reasoning, vocabulary and comprehension skills. We aim to develop and improve our student’s breadth of vocabulary and develop their spelling and comprehension ability as well as implementing practice tests to allow students and parents a gain a snapshot of what to expect for the 11+ exam.

Maths

At AEC Tuition, our year 4 students are introduced to non-verbal reasoning as well as covering other mathematical topics as part of the course such as long multiplication, long division , all four operations involving fractions, percentages, decimals, problem solving. We aim to ensure our students are more confident, fluent and exposed to some of the content of the 11+ questions to enable them to obtain the mathematical skills needed to best prepare for the 11+ exam.
